It's Winter, Right?

It's January 14th and it's 70+ degrees here in Downtown Napa.

Now California is well known for it's abundant sunshine, fresh air and blue skies BUT it is still winter and we seem to be a bit off our game. No rain....zero, zip, nada. Not a drop in months.

As the rest of the US is battling ice, snow and rains and now flooding by way of the melting ice and snow, we here in Wine Country are praying hard for rain.

California has had issues with a lack of water for years now and this year will challenge us all to conserve in everyway possible. No one is tossing it in yet and saying it is all doom and gloom but we do live and die by farming and that means we need water.

On a more upbeat front.... the EDICT 2012 whites will be out very soon!

The 2010 Cabernet will follow later in this quarter.

We are bottling our brand new Rosé on the 28th of January and that will most likely be released in March. Made from 100% Syrah grapes sourced from the Sierra Foothills and made specifically to be Rosé. This is really an amazing wine that can be enjoyed year round. We are only making 150 cases of this vintage so watch you inboxes for the offical release notice.

It will sell out fast....or I guarantee you the EDICT team will take it all!

Harvest 2013

It is amazing how fast the year goes by. When you watch the seasons change with a farmers eye, the anticipation of the harvest just seems to just roll along. But then it all happens very quickly; harvest begins and the next thing you know it is Thanksgiving. Julien summed up the 2013 vintage in 3 words: Dry, warm and EARLY!

"An early fruitset, followed by a dry and warm spring got the vineyards going very quickly. The overall vegetative cycle was about 2 weeks ahead of normal. The spring and summer here in Napa were warmer than our seasonal averages with no rain to be found but fortunately with no excessive heat either. Veraison (the maturation of the grapes where they change from green to red) happened in the second half of the month of July.

Our white wine grapes, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, arrived at the winery the last week in August which was a very early start to the harvest. There was a small break in the harvest between the whites and reds. A small heat wave in September (that came late in the vegetative cycle) pushed the sugar (brix) and aromatics quickly."

Fortunately for EDICT, our vineyards are predominately located in cooler climates of the Napa Valley so the heat wave was (mostly) a benefit to "set" the vineyards at a comfortable level of ripeness. The beautiful steady weather and Indian summer allowed for long hang time and large picking window to allow Julien our winemaker to pick at the optimal time. 2013 will show wines with beautiful structures and ripe aromatics.

As of last week, all of our 2013 wines are all safely sleeping in barrels. We sat down and tasted threw these new wines and we are just amazed at the wonderful flavors we are tasting already.

IMHO 2013 will be simply amazing. The fruit has tasted incredible on the vine all year and it is showing beautifully in the barrel.

Anticipation......

Happy Holidays to your family from the whole EDICT Wines Team!
